Why conflict resolution is important

Conflicts can arise both in our personal and professional lives for reasons such as; an incompatibility of goals, emotions, behaviours or attitudes between two or more parties. Conflict resolution training aims to give you the skills you need to intervene and find a solution to conflict. Conflict resolution skills are especially important in the workplace where the right skills can help save time, boost morale and minimise distractions.

Whenever people work together there is the opportunity for conflict because everyone is different and has different opinions and attitudes. It is important to have conflict resolution skills to ensure that when conflict does arise it is dealt with swiftly and correctly. Dealing with conflict in this manner can help to build strong relationships between staff as it can reduce the friction that can damage their working relationships, stronger working relationships will equal better collaboration which means a higher quality of work.

In our personal lives conflict can seem harder to resolve but the same principles you apply at work can be applied outside of work to help you maintain good relationships. Our course goes through these principles in detail and will help you develop your skills so you’re prepared to deal with any situation. To get you started there are some tips below that can help when trying to resolve conflict;

Separate the parties involved – Separating everyone involved in a conflict allows everyone to calm down and look at things more rationally and to focus more on the actual issue than the people.

Mediate – establish some guidelines so that the discussion remains productive and doesn’t descend into arguments or a heated debate. As an impartial mediator you can help to determine the factors creating the discord.

Brainstorm – explore any and all ideas that could provide a solution. Ensure that all parties involved are given an opportunity to share their opinions, concerns or solutions. This way you can look at all the possible solutions and come up with one that is either a win-win or one that entails compromise from all parties.
